Scoop a small portion of the plain batter into a separate bowl and stir in gel food coloring until the desired shade is achieved.

Pour plain batter evenly into prepared pans. In one pan, drop spoonfuls of colored batter in the center, then cover with additional plain batter to create a heart shape inside.
